Iconic palm trees in trendy suburb ‘set on fire’

Detectives are investigating after four iconic coastal palm trees went up in flames in Melbourne on Sunday evening.

A Victoria Police spokesman said officers responded to reports of four trees on fire on Marine Parade, which runs along the St Kilda coast, at around 7.15pm on Sunday evening.

“Port Phillip Crime Investigation Unit detectives are investigating after trees were set on fire in St Kilda on Sunday 28 April,” the spokesman said.

“No one was injured, but one tree was destroyed and three others suffered minor damage.”

Fire Rescue Victoria confirmed that firefighters were also called to the scene.

“Firefighters were called to St Kilda Marina at 7.11pm yesterday following a Triple-0 report that three palm trees were on fire,” a Fire Rescue Victoria spokesman said.

“The emergency services arrived within seven minutes and immediately began to extinguish the flames. They remained on site for another half hour to extinguish the smoldering embers.

“No boats or buildings nearby were damaged by the fire.”

The spokesman said the situation was under control at 7:22 p.m.
