As for the new film REAGAN, I fully admit that I have a very strong and persistent bias in favor of the former president. I worked as a writer in President Ronald Reagan’s White House from 1987 until the end of his term in January 1989.
In addition, I was fortunate enough to share a very personal and emotional moment with the President. He invited me to the Oval Office to commend me for something I had written.
As we were having a very cordial conversation, I mentioned that my parents, like his father, were dysfunctional alcoholics. As soon as I did that, he moved closer to me, put his hand on my shoulder and started talking about the cruelty of other children when they see their father or parents in such a state. As he spoke to me, his voice became almost a whisper as he asked me to tell him about my mother and father.
Liberal film critics denounce ‘Reagan’ film as ‘worshipful’ ‘propaganda’, but critics love Obama’s homage
As soon as I did that, his eyes filled with tears. When I saw that, I burst into tears myself, without being in the least embarrassed. The leader of the free world noticed my tears, stepped forward and embraced me.
I had never felt so much grace, compassion and kindness. Ironically, the President invited me to thank me for defending him against his critics at the time.
Now, in the present day, the extraordinary film “REAGAN” by filmmaker Sean McNamara, starring Dennis Quaid, is in cinemas. Unfortunately, but predictably, it is being panned by a number of left-wing film critics. Some are gloatingly calling it the “worst film of the year.”
While these far-left, seemingly soulless haters pat each other on the back for their predictably biased and unprofessional attacks on the film and our 40th President, they forget – or willfully ignore – one crucial fact: Ronald Reagan was a man of the people.
Americans from all walks of life loved him because he was one of them. He had been in their shoes and they knew it. It’s not the least bit surprising that these insufferable critics – who often exist only to disparage the blood, sweat and tears of truly creative people – look down on “REAGAN” when people absolutely love him.
Those who have seen the film are not only giving it an astonishing 98% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but also rave reviews in post-opening polls, and it’s exceeding expectations at the box office.

While we would need an army of trained psychologists to explain why these legitimate critics feel so much hatred, two reasons seem obvious. First, in some cases they have been indoctrinated from birth to loathe anything remotely connected to the president or his incredibly successful administration. Second, there is the fact that “REAGAN” star Quaid has mentioned that he will support former President Donald Trump in the upcoming election.
As we have established, if there is a president the far left hates more irrationally than Reagan, Trump is Trump, a man who adopted much of the Reagan Doctrine in his previous administration and now peppers his sensible speeches with it.
As these critics know, Reagan was also part of Hollywood at the time. Even then, he saw the industry undergoing a sharp shift to the left. It was a socialist-oriented movement that helped him get closer to his conservative and populist principles.
Were Reagan alive today, he probably wouldn’t be the least bit shocked by the hatred directed at him and his legacy by these left-wing critics. However, he would most likely have said with his trademark smile and laugh, “There they go again.”

This man of the people would have been humbled by the reviews that the film “REAGAN” received not only from his supporters but also from those who would have liked to have experienced his leadership qualities for themselves.
