I like to think that Taylor Swift and I have a lot in common, but our biggest similarity may be our height—and, relatedly, our posture. Swift is 5’10” or 6’11”, depending on who you ask, and as a tall girl myself, I know the temptation to slouch all too well. I suspect my own habit of slouching began in middle school, when I towered over all of my classmates and desperately tried to minimize my height around the (often shorter) boys I had crushes on. If only I’d known how that “little king summer” would manifest itself later in my life!

Swift has also often been photographed with her neck and shoulders hunched forward. Is this a technique she uses to hide from paparazzi? Maybe. A natural progression for someone who spends her life hunched over a piano? Maybe. Or is it, as some Swifties claim, the result of carrying the entire music industry on her shoulders? Almost certainly.

But lately, it seemed like Swift was on a mission to correct her posture, or at least get a little extra support, as she prepared for her physically demanding Eras Tour. The pop star was photographed wearing the Forme Power Bra ($182) while rehearsing for the tour, as she showed off in her Time Person of the Year interview. The so-called “posture correction bra” is “designed to instantly improve the alignment and foundation of your upper body,” according to the Forme website.

While I usually doubt the effectiveness of these kinds of posture correction products, Swift has been looking stronger and taller than ever in recent years. But maybe that’s just the confidence that comes with turning into a true cultural juggernaut? Anyway, I decided to test the T. Swift-endorsed sports bra for myself.

How does this posture correcting sports bra work?

There’s a method in the design of Forme’s Power Bra – so much so that it’s even registered with the FDA. (To be clear, that doesn’t mean it’s FDA-approved – just that the product can be considered a medical device.) According to the brand, the product was designed by an orthopedic surgeon with the intention of helping his mother deal with the pain caused by compressed lungs and poor posture due to cancer. It uses tension fabrics and double-fabric panels to apply pressure to key areas of your body, encouraging you to pull your shoulders back and down.

Although the style has a unique design, it felt similar to a traditional sports bra to me. The compression material hugs my body without being too restrictive or limiting my mobility. It also feels surprisingly breathable—I can comfortably wear the bra under a workout top or tank top at the gym and feel just as confident wearing the piece on its own. The mesh, spandex-like material of the sports bra also prevents sweat from pooling; while wearing it, I felt cool even during my most intense workouts.

What I like about this posture correcting sports bra

Even though I’ve only been wearing this bra for about a month, I feel like my posture has really improved in everyday life, even when I’m not wearing the sports bra – and I suspect my posture will probably only improve as I wear it more often. The bra is easy to put on and fits like a glove, while still allowing my arms plenty of freedom of movement.

I also appreciate that the style not only gives a little nudge to stand up straighter, but also works just as well as a regular sports bra. Its wire-free design is extremely comfortable and has a compressive effect that helps keep everything together – with no fear of slipping during an intense workout or yoga session.

It’s hard to quantify, but I suspect the bra has helped improve the quality of my workouts, especially my yoga sessions or back exercises. Because the style is designed to support good posture, I can more comfortably exert more energy in my stretches and reps; I don’t worry as much about getting into bad form.

What is worth mentioning

This posture correcting sports bra is just that – a sports bra. While it claims to help improve posture, it is by no means a cure-all for bad posture. If you are looking for a real solution to back pain or even need professional help for a deep-rooted habit of slouching, you are probably better off seeing a doctor to discuss your individual case and ask about useful exercises and treatments such as physical therapy. You can also ask if a product like this might be right for you.

Who is this posture correcting sports bra best suited for?

If you want a little more back support when you work out, this bra is a worthwhile investment. It may be more expensive than regular sports bras, but for me it’s worth it. I’ve personally noticed an improvement in my posture and love the extra confidence it gives me during my usual workouts. Even if you’re not interested in the supposed posture-correcting benefits of this style, it works great as a standalone sports bra. It’s made from high-quality materials and I’m confident it will hold up well over time.
