Donald Trump had multiple opportunities to express regret for the way he handled January 6th during the first presidential debate, but instead he used the opportunity to blame Nancy Pelosi for the entire coup attempt.
All of the 2021 U.S. Capitol rioters were Trump supporters who had come to Washington, DC, to attend a rally centered around the false claim that the election was being stolen from the former president. Yet Trump blamed the former House Speaker for their eventual insurrection and said he urged his supporters to act “peaceful and patriotic.”
“I had nothing to do with it other than they asked me to give a speech,” Trump said. “I didn’t do that, others did that.”
Trump repeated the debunked claim that he offered thousands of troops before January 6 and was rebuffed by Pelosi. He further claimed that Pelosi’s daughter Alexandra has an audio tape in which Pelosi admits that the January 6 riots were her fault.
“Her daughter has a tape where she says she takes full responsibility for what happened,” Trump said. “This would never have happened if Nancy Pelosi and the mayor … had done their jobs.”
There is no such clip in the documentary that Alexandra shot in her mother’s environment.
