I-76 reopens in both directions in northeast Colorado as crews battle 1,000-acre fire

WELD COUNTY, Colorado — A portion of the eastbound and westbound lanes of I-76 west of Wiggins in northeast Colorado have reopened since Thursday afternoon as emergency crews battle a fire estimated to be around 1,000 acres in size.

The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) initially announced that the interstate was closed between County Road 91 and CO 144 in Weld and Morgan counties.

CDOT’s traffic map subsequently updated the closure in both directions from Rye (9 miles east of Keenesburg) to 14 miles west of Fort Morgan.

As of 4.15 p.m. the closure was lifted.

According to the Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control (CDFPC), several air forces were requested to fight the fire.

CDOT cameras showed a traffic jam and a cloud of smoke in the distance.

Gusty winds and low humidity across the state have triggered a red flag warning of increased fire danger until 8 p.m.
