I-680 northbound closed after semi-truck hits sign

A dump truck driving a little too high damaged an elevated highway sign early Wednesday, causing a traffic jam that lasted throughout the morning rush hour.

Traffic on northbound Interstate 680 near the I-580 interchange slowed after the collision at 3:50 a.m. when the rear of the vehicle clipped the sign.

The sign, located on a freeway overpass, directs drivers as they continue north on 680 or follow the ramps to Interstate 580 toward Oakland or Livermore. The closure was due to concerns that the sign could fall onto traffic below, the CHP said.

The driver of the dump truck was not injured, the CHP said. The south side of the highway was not affected.

The CHP closed all northbound lanes and diverted vehicles off the highway south of the Stoneridge Drive exit. The Stoneridge Drive ramp to northbound I-680 was also closed.

Caltrans workers repaired the sign.

At around 11:10 a.m., vehicles finally began moving again when the California Highway Patrol opened all four lanes.

The closure also resulted in heavier traffic on I-880 northbound and State Highway 84, two branch routes used by motorists due to the closure.
