HOUGHTON, Mich. — Michigan Tech’s football team was voted sixth in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletics Conference, the league announced Tuesday (Aug. 20). Northern Michigan collected six first-place votes and leads the league with 62 points. Grand Valley State followed closely behind with the remaining three first-place votes, coming in second with a total of 58 points. Saginaw Valley State (47 points) and Ferris State (45 points) finished third and fourth, respectively. Fifth and sixth places in the coaches poll were separated by one point, with Parkside (32) earning the nod for fifth in the league while the Huskies scored 31 points.
Head coach Melissa Kuhar begins her first year at the helm of the Michigan Tech soccer program after making her first NCAA Tournament appearance since the 2014-15 season, finishing with an overall record of 8-5-7 and 7-2-5 in the final round. The Huskies return two All-Conference players. Julia Pietila (Second Division All-GLIAC Striker) and Jordan Noble (All-GLIAC honorable mention), making a total of 21 players returning from last season.
Emily Clayton And Brooke Green return as the top scorers from last fall, scoring three goals each. The Huskies’ assist leader from last year, Grace Hoeppner is also back with the Black & Gold and contributed three assists and one goal, which is a season high. Coach Kuhar has added two transfers that fit in with the four newcomers.
The Huskies open the 2024 season on the road, facing NSIC opponents St. Cloud State (Sept. 5) and Minnesota Duluth (Sept. 7). The 14-game GLIAC schedule begins Sept. 20, with the Huskies hosting Davenport at 6 p.m.
