Huskers Sweep Illinois – University of Nebraska

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The No. 2 Nebraska volleyball team won its 10th straight game with a 25-18, 25-22, 25-17 win over Illinois on Thursday night in front of 4,352 spectators.

Nebraska improved to 13-1 overall and 3-0 in the Big Ten, while Illinois fell to 8-5 on the season and 0-3 in the Big Ten.

The Huskers hit .305 and held the Fighting Illini to .217. Nebraska had five service aces with just one error, while Illinois committed 11 service errors and only had two aces. NU also had a decisive lead in blocks at 12-3.

Merritt Beason had 10 kills and hit .421 with seven blocks. Harper Murray had nine kills on .348 hits and 11 digs, and Taylor Landfair added eight kills.

Leyla Blackwell started as a middle blocker and recorded six kills on .385 batting average with three blocks. Rebekah Allick had a team-best four kills with nine blocks to go.

Bergen Reilly had 30 assists with eight digs and three kills. Lexi Rodriguez delivered a match-high 14 digs.

Raina Terry and Averie Hernandez led Illinois with 13 and 11 kills, respectively.

Set 1: After a 0:4 deficit, the Huskers fought back 7:6 after their own 4:0 run. A kill and an ace from Murray along with consecutive kills from Reilly, Blackwell and Landfair made it 12-7 Huskers. Illinois got within 15-14, but two Illini attack errors and kills from Beason and Murray gave the Big Red a 20-15 lead. Two kills from Landfair made it 23-17 for the Huskers, and Landfair won the set 25-18.

Set 2: Nebraska led 8-6 after a Blackwell kill, but Illinois went on a 6-0 run with five straight kills, including four by Hernandez. Illinois led 15-11 when Allick posted a solo block, and a block from Beason and Blackwell brought the Huskers within 16-14. Murray hit a kill to cut the score to 16-15 and the Illini took a timeout. After the break, Beason connected from the right pin to tie the score, and Rodriguez served an ace to give the Husker a 17-16 lead. After an Illinois kill, Beason recorded a kill of his own, followed by an ace for a 19-17 lead. But Illinois scored four straight goals to regain the lead at 21-19. Murray hit a sideout kill and Landfair hit an overpass to tie the set at 21-21. Blackwell had a kill and a 22-21 lead. After an Illinois timeout, Reilly and Blackwell combined for a block to make it 23-21, and a kill from Landfair secured the set point to make the score 24-22. An ace from Kennedi Orr, her second of the game, gave the Huskers a 25-22 victory.

Set 3: Blackwell had three early kills and a block to help the Big Red take a 7-5 lead. But a 4-0 run by the Illini gave them a 9-7 lead. Reilly dropped a kill and the Huskers took a 13-11 lead after two kills from Murray. A kill from Beason and two more from Murray increased the lead to three, 16-13. A 3-0 run gave the Huskers a 20-15 lead. Lindsay Krause had a kill and Beason and Allick teamed up for a block before Allick made the kill. After Illinois cut the score to 20-17, Allick and Krause made a block and Allick connected again to give the Husker a 22-17 lead. Allick finished the match 25-17, with a kill between two blocks with Beason. The Huskers closed the set on an 8-2 run and Allick was involved in scoring NU’s final seven points as the Huskers finished the set with seven blocks.

Next up: The Huskers host Iowa on Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Bob Devaney Sports Center on Nebraska Public Media and the Husker Sports Network.
