Hurricane Helene temporarily closes the North Georgia State Fair

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – The North Georgia State Fair will be closed Wednesday and Thursday as Hurricane Helene barrels toward metro Atlanta.

Spivey’s Southern Grill sells cheesesteaks, Italian sausages and other meats at the fair. They’ve been in town for about a week, but had to make some adjustments Wednesday given the forecast wind and rain.

“We take down our top banners and stake out the entire nine meters of material so nothing goes flying off,” said JC Tulloh of Spivey’s.

Rides and other providers did the same. They board up stalls and put up tents to keep their shops dry.

Dana Jackson runs Three Ladies Baking. She sells freshly baked cookies at events throughout Cobb County. She estimates the two-day closure will cost her about $3,000 in profit and excess product.

“I just went to Mayfield and got 250 milk. So I might have a lot of milk left,” Jackson said.

North Georgia Fair spokeswoman Missy Miller said it is rare for the event to have to close due to inclement weather, but they are working to ensure the safety of vendors and visitors.

“Of course it’s the worst-case scenario for us. But we have to go along and do what we think is in the best interest of the public,” Miller said.

The plan is currently for the fair to reopen on Friday at 4 p.m
