According to the National Hurricane Center, Helene has developed into a hurricane as it moves across the Gulf of Mexico toward the United States.

The storm struck the Yucatan Peninsula on Wednesday morning and strengthened into a hurricane with winds up to 80 miles per hour. The storm is expected to move toward Florida.

Where in the United States is Tropical Storm Helene expected to make landfall?

The storm is expected to make landfall around the Florida Panhandle as a major hurricane with winds over 110 mph (177 km/h). The storm will then move north through Georgia and central Tennessee as a tropical depression before moving west into Kentucky.

Will Delaware be affected by Hurricane Helene?

As of 11 a.m. Wednesday, Delaware is safe from the storm, but it’s possible the direction could change. The bigger concern is a non-tropical low pressure system several hundred miles east of Delaware.

The chance of the storm developing into a cyclone is less than 10%, but it could cause large waves and rip currents on Delaware beaches.

Patrick O’Hara, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service office in Mount Holly, New Jersey, said the storm could produce significant waves but it could take some time to reach land.

“Wave and current activity could increase throughout the weekend,” O’Hara said.

Delaware Weather Forecast

According to the National Weather Service, there is a 30-40% chance of rain Thursday through Saturday, with highs between 77 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Sunday will be partly sunny, less humid, and highs below 70 degrees Fahrenheit.
