Hurricane-force winds, heavy rain and hail possible in southeast Wyoming

The National Weather Service’s Cheyenne office says winds of 75 mph are possible in southeast Wyoming today, particularly around Interstate 25 and farther east.

In addition, for the first time in four years, the possibility of a derecho exists.

The agency issued a special weather advisory on Tuesday morning that included the following:

  • Today, considerable wind danger is expected. Particularly east of I-25 into western Nebraska. A line of strong to severe storms will form along the cold front moving through the region today. The biggest concern in this region is strong, damaging winds, with gusts over 70-80 mph possible in the strongest storms. An isolated gust could reach up to 85 mph in the Nebraska Panhandle this afternoon/evening.
  • A derecho is expected to form along an approaching, strong cold front that will move across southeast Wyoming and western Nebraska this afternoon and evening. A Increased risk The Storm Prediction Center has issued a severe weather warning for parts of western Nebraska. Low and low risk are also still present in other areas of southeastern Wyoming and western Nebraska.

The agency published the following on its website:

An atypical strong weather system for this late time of year will move through the area today along with a strong cold front. This front is expected to spawn a line of strong to severe thunderstorms that will move east-northeast across the High Plains through Tuesday evening. 🚨🚨🚨 Weather forecasts are increasing and this event could become a derecho, which we haven’t had in our area since June 6, 2020. Keep an eye on the weather today as the thunderstorms may produce significant wind gusts up to 65 knots/75 mph or more. 🌬️While this line of severe weather will be brief, expect heavy rain and small hail, the main concern is for damaging winds possibly over 70 mph. The areas of the Nebraska Panhandle highlighted in the oval will have the highest chance of the strongest wind gusts later in the day. ☈ Thunderstorms will begin in Carbon and Albany counties this morning and at noon and eventually move into the I-25 corridor between 2 and 6 p.m. this afternoon. Areas in the Nebraska Panhandle can expect severe thunderstorms between 5 and 8 p.m.
