Game Notes

Finally, here are UVA’s game notes:

Insights into Saturday’s duel

  • Virginia and Coastal Carolina meet for the first time in program history.
  • The two teams were scheduled to face each other on November 19, 2022 at Scott Stadium, but the contest was canceled due to the tragedy at the venue that claimed the lives of Devin Chandler, Lavel Davis Jr. and D’Sean Perry on November 13, 2022.
  • The two teams will play against each other again next season on August 30 in Charlottesville.
  • Virginia will play against a Sun Belt team for the third consecutive year. The Cavaliers have a 5-4 overall record against current Sun Belt members (JMU – 2-2; ODU – 0-2; Troy – 1-0; Southern Miss – 0-2).
  • Coastal Carolina is one of 31 teams nationally with three wins and one of 43 undefeated teams in the FBS. Including the Chanticleers (3-0), UVA has four undefeated teams on its schedule – Louisville (2-0), North Carolina (3-0), Pitt (3-0).
  • Virginia has won two of its first three games for the second time under third-year head coach Tony Elliott. The Cavaliers started the year 2-1 in his first season in 2022.
  • The Cavaliers are looking to record three wins in their first four games for the first time since 2019, when they started 4-0. Virginia has won three (or more) of its first four games four times in the last 16 years (2019 – 4-0; 2018 – 3-1; 2017 – 3-1).

Popular storylines

  • The Cavaliers suffered a 27-13 loss to former ACC rival Maryland in Week 3. The Cavaliers led 13-7 at halftime but failed to score a single point in the final 30 minutes.
  • UVA had four turnovers last week, which is the most in a game in the Tony Elliott era (Maryland, 2023 and Georgia Tech in 2022). Despite the turnovers, the UVA defense allowed just seven points from the four offensive errors.
  • Virginia will face a non-Power 4/5 team on the road for the first time since 2021, when they visited BYU. Previously, UVA visited Notre Dame (2019) and Boise State (2017) in non-Power 4/5 games.
  • Virginia’s streak of nine straight games with a 100-yard receiver ended Saturday against Maryland. Wideout Malachi Fields is third in the ACC in receiving yards with 248. He is six receptions away from 100 in his career.
  • Anthony Colandrea has started nine times in his career, recording ten 200-yard passing attempts and three 300-yard performances. He is 140 yards away from 3,000 career passing yards.
