CHARLOTTE, N.C. — In a neutral-site game that could be entertaining and exciting, two Power 4 schools will meet under the lights Saturday when the Tennessee Volunteers face the North Carolina State Wolfpack in the Duke’s Mayo Classic.

The Duke’s Mayo Classic is an event that takes place at the beginning of every season (except 2020) and brings teams like Clemson, Georgia and South Carolina to Charlotte. Both the Volunteers and Wolfpack have played in this game before. Tennessee was beaten by West Virginia in 2018, while North Carolina State lost to South Carolina in 2017.

Tennessee may not be the favorite to win the SEC title, but they have ambitions to stay in the race and sneak into the expanded College Football Playoff. There were plenty of examples of potential brilliance in their 69-3 domination of Chattanooga last week. Quarterback Nico Iamaleava threw three touchdown passes in the win, while running back Dylan Sampson also scored three touchdowns.

A similar story can be told about NC State. Although they have little chance of making the CFP, the Wolfpack are a solid team that can cause some chaos in the top-heavy ACC. In fact, they had some trouble against Western Carolina in their season opener last week, only coming away with a 38-21 win.

This is the first meeting between the two programs since 2012, with Tennessee winning two of the three all-time meetings.
