On the first day of the Republican National Convention, former President Donald Trump announced that Ohio Senator JD Vance would be his running mate in the 2024 presidential election.

Vance, 39, is a first-term senator and rose to prominence with the publication of his memoir, Hillbilly Elegy, in 2016.

The book describes his journey from a childhood of poverty to law school at Yale and has been used by media pundits to explain Trump’s popularity among white rural Americans in 2016.

The book was adapted into a 2020 Netflix film, starring Amy Adams as Vance’s mother and Glenn Close as his grandmother.

What is the movie “Hillbilly Elegy” about?

According to the Netflix synopsis, “A former Southern Ohio Marine and current Yale Law student is on the verge of landing his dream job when a family crisis forces him to return to the home he’s tried to forget.”

USA TODAY called the film “well acted…but unfortunately its disjointed story is regrettable.” Others criticized the film for portraying stereotypes about Appalachia and exploiting its residents.

It received a score of 6.7/10 on IMDB and a Tomatometer rating of 25% on Rotten Tomatoes.
