Krispy Kreme has decided to turn Friday the 13th into a lucky offer.
The doughnut chain announced an offer valid only on Friday, September 13: Customers can purchase a dozen Original Glazed Donuts for just 13 cents.
To get the deal, people need to buy a full-price box of doughnuts or a 16-pack of minis and use the promo code “13” when ordering in-store or online through the app or website. There is a limit of one box of 13-cent doughnuts per customer.
The list of participating Krispy Kreme stores can be found on the chain’s website.
The store’s offering is called “Lucky Friday” and is based on the superstition that 13 is an unlucky number and Friday the 13th is considered an unlucky day. Over the years, various reasons have been given as to why the date is considered a bad omen.
The superstition surrounding Friday the 13th has its origins in the Last Supper, which 13 people – Jesus Christ and his 12 disciples – attended on Maundy Thursday, the night before his crucifixion by Roman soldiers on Good Friday.
The number 13 is therefore associated with Judas Iscariot, the betrayer of Christ, and is considered imperfect compared to the number 12, which represents the number of months in a year. In most years there are two Fridays the 13th – and sometimes three.
Wendy’s has also made an offer to celebrate this rare occasion. Rewards members can receive a free order of Hot & Crispy Fries in any size with any in-app purchase.
They can also get a small Frosty treat for $1 through the end of the month, and the offer is repeatable. Customers can choose from the chain’s current Frosty flavors: the tried-and-true chocolate variety and the revived fan-favorite Vanilla Frosty, which is officially back on Wendy’s menus nationwide.
Krispy Kreme is also currently offering a collaboration with Barbie in honor of the doll’s 65th birthday with a limited-edition menu that was released earlier this month on September 3rd.
The Barbie-inspired collection includes four donuts – Barbie Pink, Malibu Dream Party, Barbie Berries n’ Kreme and Barbie Sweet 65th – each of which is an ode to the toys.
The Barbie Berries n’ Kreme Donut is an unglazed donut filled with strawberry cream, dipped in white icing, drizzled with purple and pink buttercream, and decorated with a heart with the Barbie logo on it.
The Barbie Sweet 65th is a glazed chocolate-covered donut with sprinkles in classic Barbie colors like various shades of pink and a blue reminiscent of the Malibu sky.
The Malibu Dream Party Donut is unglazed and filled with a cake batter cream, dipped in Malibu blue glaze and glittery graham sand, and topped with a white cloud in addition to the doll’s dream house.
And the Barbie Pink is a glazed donut with pink icing, sprinkled with glittery pink sugar and garnished with Barbie sunglasses.
