How to get compensation for property damage after a pipeline fire

HOUSTON – Property owners struggling with losses from the massive pipeline blaze in the Deer Park fire are still trying to process the news, with many of them soon set to begin the process of filing insurance claims.

In times of such a disaster, it is easy to understand that one might be overwhelmed and even panic. Now the owner of an insurance agency explains what steps those affected must take.

“The situation is pretty dire in this area,” said Nikki Cavazos, agency owner of Cavazos Insurance, The Woodlands Financial Group.

“If they’re panicking, I would definitely do that,” she continued. “If they don’t know their insurance company, contact their mortgage company. They’ll give them their name and policy number.”

Cavazos says it’s natural for affected homeowners to feel overwhelmed, but it’s important to contact the claims adjuster immediately.

“First of all, we can provide them with living expenses. Most insurance companies pay living expenses,” she said.

If possible, be sure to take photos and keep an inventory and all receipts of the damaged goods, she adds.

“Most of the homes are replacement cost, so they don’t have to worry about not getting paid for their personal belongings,” she said.

Cavazos says the same applies to vehicles damaged by the fire. She also pointed out that water damage caused by firefighters’ efforts to contain the fire scene should not negatively impact your claim.

“Of course, firefighters have to come out to put out the fire, so it would just be a claim. You don’t have to pay a water damage deductible, a fire deductible, and so on and so forth,” she said.

Cavazos says these are mostly general rules of thumb, and it’s important to review your policy and speak to your claims adjuster to get clarity on your exact coverage.
