How to correct your 2024 French tax return: a comprehensive guide

Changes are possible until December

The process for correcting your return depends on how you originally provided the information in the spring.

If you’re worried you made a mistake on your tax return earlier this year, you still have time to correct it.

Although the deadline for filing income returns for 2024 (for 2023 income) was in May or June (depending on where you live), the service to correct the information if necessary was not opened until July 31.

It will be open until December 4th and will allow you to make changes to the information you have submitted in the event of an error or inadvertent omission.

How do I make changes to my French tax return?

If you need to make a change, you can do so via your personal space on the French tax authority website.

Once you are logged in, click on the Go directly to correction button to make the necessary changes.

You will receive a current Evaluation (tax assessment) once you have made the changes and indicate the new amount of tax you expect to pay (if you have to pay any).

This Evaluation is not processed automatically and it may take some time until it appears in your personal area.

Please note that not all information can be changed. For example, your personal details (marital status, address, etc.) cannot be changed in this way.

If it is not possible to edit the requested information, you can contact the tax office by Secure messages Service.

Click this button and then Write > I signal an error in calculating my data I fear that the income or social benefits are significant. Then explain what you want to change and why.

If you made your original declaration via the impots.gouv mobile application, changes can only be made via the smartphone app.

Log in to the service and follow the same instructions as for the website listed above.

Changes can also be made to paper registrations

If you declare your income using a paper form, corrections are possible up to two years after submission.

You cannot use the French tax website to correct your return (as it is not available in your personal space).

However, you have the option – analogous to the method described above – to use the messaging system to report an error to the authorities.

You can also send a letter to your local tax office. The letter must contain the following:

  • Your full name

  • address

  • Handwritten signature,

  • The name of the tax in question (in this case Tax return 2024)

  • Your tax number (Tax number)

  • The reason for the change

You must attach all supporting documents for the change.

Tax refund incoming bank statements
