How this flight attendant lives a tax-free “dream life” for 10 years without paying rent
The idea of not having to pay rent while working may seem like a dream. But one flight attendant has made that dream come true and is now enjoying a “dream life” thanks to the airline industry.
At 33, Alexandra Cosoff left Queensland, Australia to become a flight attendant for Emirates. Cosoff now lives in Dubai and hasn’t paid rent in ten years.
As cabin manager for Emirates, Cosoff enjoys a “generous benefits package,” according to a 2023 news.com.au report.
“Our accommodation is provided and the salary is tax free. Plus a lot of other things are covered like transport, laundry and full medical and dental care,” Cosoff told news.com.au. “We are very well looked after.”
In Australia, Cosoff had to spend a lot of her income on rent and bills. With Emirates, she can now save more of her income while travelling the world.
“What really attracted me was that I didn’t have to pay taxes on top of my salary,” Cosoff said.
She explained that she was staying in an apartment provided by the airline.
“You can either choose company-provided accommodation or opt for a housing subsidy,” she said.
Cosoff used to be a makeup artist and now enjoys what she calls the “dream life.”
“I was incredibly lucky. I had the most amazing experiences,” she said.
Cosoff also mentioned that Emirates’ flight attendant training is intensive and lasts eight weeks.
“The training is very demanding, but it stays with you for life – you learn to be aware of the culture and to remain calm and composed. And once you have these skills, no one can take them away from you,” she explains.
Why it is important:
According to the report, new Emirates flight attendants receive a base salary of around $1,236 per month and an hourly wage of around $17.86. They typically complete between 80 and 100 hours of flight time per month and also receive meal allowances.
On average, economy class flight attendants earn about $3,435 a month, while cabin crew tend to earn even more.
Cosoff, who has a degree in marketing and public relations, said a career in aviation has always appealed to her.
“Ever since I was a little girl, I dreamed of becoming a flight attendant. I remember seeing the Emirates cabin crew on TV with their red hats and flashy red lipstick and thinking, ‘Wow, they’re so beautiful,'” she recalls.
She encouraged anyone interested in the profession to apply, calling it “a dream come true.”
