How the FedExCup playoffs work while Rory McIlroy eyes £19 million in prize money | Golf | Sport

The PGA Tour’s FedExCup Playoffs are back, with only 70 players left to compete for this year’s championship title – and huge prize money. PGA Tour players have competed in 36 FedExCup events in 2024, including all four majors.

After the regular season is completed, this month’s playoffs will crown the final winner on September 1. Norwegian golfer Viktor Hovland is the reigning champion, while Rory McIlroy, who won in 2016, 2019 and 2022, has a good chance of winning and earning a significant amount of money.

The FedExCup is a season-long points competition on the PGA Tour. The top 70 players from the Wyndham Championship in August advanced to the first playoff event – ​​the FedEx St Jude Championship at TPC Southwind.

Following this tournament, the top 50 players qualify for the BMW Championship in Denver the following week. The top 30 advance to the final of the Tour Championship in Atlanta.

The FexExCup leader begins the Tour Championship at 10 under par, while the No. 2 player begins at 8 under par, No. 3 at 7 under par, No. 4 at 6 under par and No. 5 at 5 under par. Players 6-10 begin at 4 under par, players 16-20 at 2 under par, players 21-25 at 1 under par and players 26-30 at even par.

The Tour Championship is a 72-hole stroke play, meaning whoever is in the lead at the end wins the tournament and is crowned FedExCup champion.

Scottie Scheffler has six wins this season and currently leads the field with 5,993 points, an impressive 2,000 ahead of Xander Schauffele and almost 3,500 ahead of Rory McIlroy. The rest of the top 10 are Collin Morikawa, Wyndham Clark, Ludvig Aberg, Sahith Theegala, Hideki Matsuyama, Sungjae Im and Ireland’s Shane Lowry.

The Scotsman Robert MacIntyre and the Englishman Aaron Rai are in 17th and 25th place. Rai won the Wyndham Championship and secured his first PGA Tour title. Rai’s compatriots Tommy Fleetwood (32), Matthew Fitzpatrick (40) and Justin Rose (55) are also on their way to the FedEx St Jude Championship, as is the Irishman Seamus Power (66).

Each event will be broadcast live on Sky Sports. Coverage of the FedEx St Jude Championship begins this Thursday at 5pm on Sky Sports Golf, and continues from 9.30pm on Sky Sports Main Event.

The FexEx St Jude Championship will take place from August 15th to 19th. The BMW Championship from August 22nd to 25th and the Tour Championship from August 29th to September 1st.

The winner of the Tour Championship will receive a whopping $25 million (£19.6 million). The runner-up will receive $12.5 million (£9.7 million) and everyone else in the top 10 will receive at least $1.75 million (£1.4 million).
