Six Indianapolis-area schools were among 16 Indiana schools named to the National Blue Ribbon Schools list this year for their academic excellence and commitment to closing achievement gaps.

This year’s list, released Monday, recognizes the work of students and teachers at these schools, U.S. Education Secretary Miguel Cardona said in a press release.

“The 2024 National Blue Ribbon Schools raise the bar for our nation’s students and serve as role models for effective teaching and intentional collaboration in their schools and communities,” Cardona said. “As we celebrate their successes, we should look to these schools for inspiration as we advance education as the foundation for a better future for every child.”

What does it mean to be a Blue Ribbon School?

Established in 1982, the National Blue Ribbon Schools program provides annual recognition to schools that demonstrate overall academic success and/or make significant progress in closing achievement gaps among different student groups.

The U.S. Department of Education examines all schools – private and public – and ranks them based on student assessment data, the performance of individual student subgroups, and graduation rates.

Schools are nominated by the Indiana Secretary of Education or the Council for American Private Education and must meet certain requirements, such as performance data, demographic data, and achievement of individual student subgroups.

Schools then submit applications detailing their school culture, programs, assessments, teaching methods, professional development, leadership, and family and community engagement.

Up to 240 schools are nominated each year.

A list of Indiana winners from previous years is available on the Indiana Department of Education website.
