How Barcelona’s €10m sale of Julian Araujo aids plans to register Dani Olmo and Inigo Martinez for La Liga’s opening match

Barcelona completed the transfer of Julian Araujo to Premier League team Bournemouth for a transfer fee of 10 million euros on August 14.

Although this deal is far from the most lucrative for the Catalans, it could prove to be a welcome windfall ahead of the start of the new La Liga season this weekend.

Barca begins its top-flight season on Saturday at Mestalla against Valencia and, as always, the specter of financial difficulties looms over its ambitions for the 2024/25 season.

It seemed possible that Araujo would play in the first games of the season, especially since the player himself admitted that he would like to fulfil his contract. However, after his move to Bournemouth was confirmed, the Mexican international made it clear that he had only one wish.

“When I heard about the opportunity, I told my agent to stop all negotiations with other teams,” he told his new club’s television station. “I found it very exciting. I had a conversation with the coach and the sporting director and it all sounded very exciting to me.”

Araujo’s desire to push through a move to the Premier League could now prove beneficial to Hansi Flick’s Barca plans.

How the sale of Julian Araujo helps the plans to register Dani Olmo and Inigo Martinez

As things stand, new signing Dani Olmo is one of five players not registered in La Liga ahead of Barca’s opening game in Valencia.

The reason for this is essentially the club’s financial problems. The salary restrictions imposed by the league due to the club’s difficulties mean that Olmo, defender Inigo Martinez, Alex Valle, Pablo Torre or Pau Victor cannot be signed yet, according to Mundo Deportivo.

Flick is reportedly particularly concerned about Martinez’s situation because Barca’s defensive problems are so severe. Ronald Araujo is injured, Jules Kounde is likely to play at right-back and Andreas Christensen could have to resume his makeshift defensive midfield role from last season. The other centre-backs, Pau Cubarsi and Eric Garcia, have only just returned from the Olympics.

Selling Julian Araujo could help in that regard. If sporting director Deco can pull off a few more departures, such as Vitor Roque – either on loan or permanently – and at least one of Clement Lenglet and Ansu Fati, then the total could well allow them to sign Olmo and Martinez with ease.
