House of Representatives approves local control over local property taxes

DENVER, CO – The House of Representatives today passed a resolution that would allow Colorado voters to decide whether property tax decisions should be made at the local level. HCR24B-1001 passed by a vote of 44 to 19.

“Local taxes must be controlled locally,” said Rep. Mike Weissman, Democrat from Aurora. “Colorado communities have different needs and ideas about how property tax revenue can best benefit their communities. It makes no sense for voters in Aurora to make property tax decisions for Colorado residents in areas like the San Luis Valley and vice versa. Statewide property tax decisions do not meet the individual needs of all of our communities. This resolution would allow voters to decide whether their communities should make future property tax decisions that affect them.”

Property tax revenues fund local government services such as schools, fire, emergency services and public safety and non-government services. If passed, HCR24B-1001 would put a ballot measure before Colorado voters for the November 2024 election to ensure local control over property tax decisions. Any statewide ballot initiative that affects or limits property tax revenues or spending would have to be approved by voters in a local government district for the initiative to be implemented in that local government.
