House Democrats push for OSDE timetable on funding and service issues before school starts

As Oklahoma schools open their doors for the 2024-25 school year, House Democrats have asked the Oklahoma State Department of Education (OSDE) for a detailed timeline regarding outstanding funding and service issues, according to a press release sent Friday.

The call to action came amid growing concerns about financial discrepancies and delayed services affecting school districts across the state, the press release said.

In a press release from the Oklahoma House of Representatives, Democratic leaders expressed frustration with the lack of progress despite repeated calls for accountability from the Republican majority. They argue that the state inspector general’s alleged negligence requires a committee of inquiry to ensure transparency and proper management of educational resources.

On August 15, 2024, the Legislative Office of Fiscal Transparency (LOFT) announced it would investigate OSDE’s spending concerns. Although the investigation is expected to continue into next year, Democrats stress the urgency of addressing these issues promptly to meet the immediate needs of students and schools.

Several school districts have reported missing funds, which Rep. Andy Fugate (D-Del City) said should have been addressed before the start of the school year. The release noted that schools in Oklahoma start in mid-August, so timely responses and assistance are critical.

According to the press release, Democrats are also concerned about several unresolved issues, including Title 1 funding, maternity leave reimbursement, school safety funds, and the provision of inhalers for students. Problems with teacher licensure renewal and student information systems for students with special needs also further exacerbate the situation.

The press release states that House Democrats have called on OSDE to demonstrate that it has sufficient staff to address and resolve these pressing issues, stressing that their efforts are focused on ensuring that public school districts receive the necessary resources and support to effectively serve students.
