Hot and sunny today; tropical system expected to arrive by the end of the week

COLUMBUS, Ga. (WRBL) — Happy Monday morning! The day ahead will bring plenty of sunshine throughout the morning, but will become cloudy in the afternoon while highs will rise to the highs of 90 degrees and the heat index will be above 35 degrees.

A quiet start to the week as the weather pattern remains summery with mostly sunny skies and warm temperatures under high pressure; however, major changes are in store for the rest of the week.

We are seeing two major weather phenomena that will likely be interdependent over the rest of the week. As high pressure weakens, a cold front is approaching from the west. We are also seeing a tropical system forming in the western Caribbean. This system will likely develop into a hurricane within 36-48 hours.

All forecasts indicate that the storm will make landfall in the Florida Panhandle and then move inland across Alabama and Georgia. However, if the front moves in early, the track could shift further east. But at this point, we’ll likely see the first impacts late Wednesday and Thursday as the storm moves inland.

As the system moves inland, heavy rains are possible, which may lead to flooding, very gusty winds with tropical storm force, and an increased risk of tornadoes. We will have more details in the next 24 hours.
