Horror fans have chosen the best horror film of 2024 – and it is not Longlegs

Thank the ghosts and shake hands with the ghouls, because 2024 was a banner year for horror movies – although fans have a pretty good idea which was the best film yet.

From the bizarre (and frankly terrifying) marketing plan for Longlegs to the polarizing release of Late Night with the Devil, horror has dominated most conversations at the cinema coffee machine this year. And with so many more exciting horror films coming our way in 2024, we’ve only just scratched the surface.

Horror movie fans have indeed been spoiled this year. From serial killers to the devil himself, every classic villain has received their share of attention. But in a viral X-post, fans have voted on their favorite of the year and the results are pretty unanimous.

When asked to choose Longlegs, Late Night with the Devil, MaXXXine, and The First Omen as the best movies of 2024 (at least for horror nerds), the majority of respondents didn’t hesitate to pick a winner. And no, it’s not Longlegs—The First Omen takes the crown for now.

As the title suggests, “The First Omen” is part of the long-running Omen series – a prequel to the original film and the sixth installment overall.

The film is part of a long history of horror stories involving nuns and is about an American nun who goes to a Catholic orphanage in Rome and discovers a horrific conspiracy that will bring about the birth of the Antichrist.

In our own review of The First Omen, we also called it the “best horror film of 2024 so far.”

The film was a success with both critics and at the box office, currently sitting at 81% on Rotten Tomatoes.

One X-user wrote: “The first Omen is the best horror film of the year, and that’s not even a contest. Arkasha Stevenson’s great direction brought back the realism of the 1970s while creating an incredibly dark horror atmosphere. For me, it was the biggest surprise of the year.”

“The First Omen: Amazingly a feature film debut considering the creepy intensity of the images, the power and the atmospheric quality. Arkasha Stevenson made it something really special – and Nell Tiger Free’s performance, holy shit,” said another.

“I’m as surprised as you are, but it’s THE FIRST OMEN,” agreed a third.

One reviewer said: “The first Omen was not only one of the best horror films, but one of the best films I’ve ever seen. I can’t remember ever pausing a film so many times just to admire the footage that was playing… it really is so insanely beautiful.”

“The first Omen is the most relentless and disgusting film of the year. Arkasha Stevenson has a truly unique voice and Nell Tiger Free is unreal in it. Nasty, terrifying film. Phenomenal work. By far the best here in my opinion,” agreed one user.

“The First Omen” is currently available to stream on Hulu.
