The Indian state of Assam has launched a mobile app aimed at reducing the number of deaths caused by wild elephants.

The Haati app warns people about approaching herds of elephants so they can avoid them.

Assam has one of the largest elephant populations in India and a high number of elephant-human deaths are due to interactions between them.

Conservationists say elephants in Assam are becoming more aggressive because their habitat is shrinking and even their traditional natural corridors are being affected.

1,701 people were killed by elephants in India from 2020 to 2024, according to official data cited by the Hindustan Times in March.

The app launched in Assam was developed by Aaranyak, a biodiversity organization in northeast India.

It also includes a form that victims and their families can use to claim compensation from local authorities in the event of injuries or deaths resulting from an animal attack.

Aaranyak has also presented a manual on solar-powered fences that can deter elephants.
