Honors Magic V3 will feature AI Defocus technology to reduce eye strain

Honor’s foldable Magic V3 comes with a number of generative AI features in collaboration with Google Cloud. But the company just announced something even more interesting: the industry’s first “AI Defocus Display technology.” The new technology is designed to reduce eye strain when using the phone and also reduce nearsightedness (users’ myopia). First off, we have “Enhanced Eye Protection.” This technology uses AI algorithms on the Honor Magic V3 to simulate traditional optical methods. As the name suggests, these aim to reduce eye strain and temporary myopia by incorporating “defocus signals into screen planes.”

The foldable device also features ultra-high PWM dimming, which ensures reduced screen flicker. Screen flicker also causes eye strain, so reducing it helps protect your eyes when interacting with the phone.

The Honor Magic V3 also features something called “Myopia Control.” The company says that myopia rates are rising worldwide. The AI Defocus display technology uses “Defocus Incorporated Multiple Segments,” or DIMS, used in special glasses to prevent axial extension of eye signals.

Hoor also says the new display technology can reduce temporary myopia by an average of 13 degrees (according to the company’s testing).

Honor also emphasizes on “expanding app support” for the technology. Currently, the AI Defocus technology is only compatible with YouTube and Amazon Kindle (if you’re a YouTube binge-watcher like me, you’ll definitely love this). But as expected, the company plans to expand it to support more apps in the future. However, we don’t know which apps will be supported yet.

The Honor Magic V3 is expected to be officially launched on September 5th during the IFA in Berlin. The phone has already been unveiled in China. It is currently the thinnest and lightest foldable book model on the market.

In my opinion, the future belongs to eye protection technology on the phone. My eyes get very tired from constantly staring at screens at work and this is often the reason why I don’t answer my phone after work. Improving eye strain will be a very important step towards solving a major problem we face when using our smartphones on a daily basis.
