Hone brings fallen trees and raging rivers to Maui

IAO VALLEY (HawaiiNewsNow) – Iao Valley State Monument reopened Monday after being closed Sunday due to severe weather.

The sun was shining and the creek was a little rough, but overall, residents say it was a beautiful day after a weekend of much-needed rain.

“I’m super thankful for the rain. I’m glad it wasn’t as bad as we expected,” said Kahului resident Cristyal Banasihan.

The Kalilikane Ohana captured video of the raging Kahakuloa Creek near their home on Saturday. They said the water was so rough they couldn’t cross the road to see their cousins.

“We wanted to go to the hotel to swim with them, but we couldn’t because the water was too high and we couldn’t get across,” said Rayna Kalilikane-Gore.

Further inland in Makawao, Cheryl Wicklund said the roof of her barn blew off early Sunday morning.

“It looks like the whole roof fell off. You could see all the wood, nails and electrical wires. It looks like someone ripped it open,” Wicklund said.

In East Maui, the creek near Oheo in Kipahulu was raging on Sunday. Meanwhile, workers were busy clearing landslides along the Hana Highway.

“I’ve seen some of the state teams at work. They’re still working. They’re working 16-hour days and they’re working hard. We want to thank them and all the teams that are out there during the hurricane,” said East Maui City Councilor Shane Sinenci. “Like everyone else, we needed the rain. So Hone was kind of a Honi for us with his beautiful Uakea rain.”

The county is urging everyone to sign up for MEMA alerts.
