Teenage pace bowler Daniel Hogg took a sensational seven wickets on his first-class debut for Durham to help Durham to a County Championship Division One victory over Nottinghamshire.

Hogg, who had already taken three second-innings wickets before the final day’s play at Chester-le-Street, mopped up Nottinghamshire’s back-end, finishing with 7-66 (and a match score of 8-100), while Durham bowled the visitors out for 285 at the second time of asking to win by an innings and 17 runs.

Without Mark Wood, Matty Potts and Ben Stokes all in action for England, the 19-year-old’s performance, coupled with the maiden first-class century from his Durham Academy teammate Ben McKinney, gave the home fans a hopeful look into the future.

While Durham cemented its position in mid-table with its overwhelming victory, Notts remained second throughout and now find themselves in a relegation battle ahead of the final four games of the season.

At 212-6 and still 90 points behind, Notts’ aim was to finish the morning session with rain forecast for the afternoon. However, their hopes of survival were dashed just 12 minutes into play when Jack Haynes edged Hogg to Scott Borthwick on the first slip for a 69.

Lyndon James, who made 56 in the first innings, hit Ben Raine for two consecutive fours, but Hogg took his fifth wicket when Calvin Harrison advanced to third slip.

This left the visitors at 233-8, but England’s second Test candidate Olly Stone joined James in batting to frustrate the hosts with a 50-run stand for the ninth wicket.

Hogg then took the wicket of Stone, lbw for 29, before the teenager secured victory when Brett Hutton was caught behind strike by Ollie Robinson.

Durham now travel to Taunton to face Somerset on Thursday, while Notts host league leaders Surrey.
