Hofstra and Columbia reach scoreless draw in Pride’s home opener

Hempstead, NY – Mackenzie Sullivan made three saves as the Hofstra University women’s soccer team opened its home schedule Friday afternoon with a 0-0 tie against Columbia at Hofstra Soccer Stadium. Hofstra improved its season record to 0-0-2 with the tie, while the Lions are now 0-0-1.

Sullivan, a veteran goalkeeper making her first start of the season, saved all three shots fired at her. In the first half, Columbia’s Angel Akanyirige headed a shot that Sullivan deflected onto the crossbar with one hand, making her first save. Her second save came in the 63rd minute when she stopped a deflected shot from Maia Tabion, while she made her third save in the 88th minute when she stopped a shot from Columbia’s Annie Faraone.

Hofstra’s offense was held in check by Columbia’s defense and had three shots, none of which went on goal. Millie Davis had two of the three hits of the Pride with Thorhildur Thorhallsdottir notch the other.

Hofstra will return to action on Sunday when it hosts Yale at 3:30 p.m.

Notes:

-Columbia had a 10-3 advantage in shots on goal and a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks.

-Hofstra has an overall record of 10-6-3 against Columbia and ended a two-game losing streak with the tie.

-Hofstra has never started a season with two consecutive ties in its 32-year history.
