Hillary Clinton on supporting a possible President Harris: “All hands on deck”

Former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton says she is willing to do whatever is asked to help a possible Harris-Waltz administration.

In an interview with CBS News’ Erin Moriarty, Clinton was asked if she would like to play a role in the White House – officially or unofficially – if Vice President Kamala Harris wins. “Obviously, unofficially, I want to be as helpful as possible and would do anything I’m asked to do,” she replied. “We have so much to do that really, all hands should be on deck. And anyone who can help in any capacity should be willing to do so.”

Clinton also said she was willing to do whatever it takes to help Harris win. “I will do everything I can from now until the election to help her get elected – anything that is asked of me, anything that I can think of. And then I’m more than willing to offer her any advice or help that she feels is appropriate to help her become president and be the best president she can be.”

Clinton also spoke about the prospects of a President Harris in the Oval Office.

“I’m so optimistic about our country, despite the difficult times,” Clinton said. “I’m, as my late friend Madeleine Albright always said, an optimist who worries a lot. But I’m fundamentally optimistic.”

“I am very optimistic about a Harris-Waltz administration because I think it not only has the ability to deal with all the known problems, but perhaps also calm the mood in the country. Tim Walz, the coach of America, and Kamala, with her genuine sense of patriotism and commitment to the country and her desire to unite it, would be the president of all Americans, not half the nation.

“Maybe we can break the fever,” Clinton said. “Let’s take a few deep breaths again and look for ways to work together. We could accomplish so much if we listened to each other, talked to each other and made principled compromises. I think they have the potential to really accomplish that for our country.”

In a detailed talk show on “CBS Sunday Morning”, Clinton discussed her new book, “Something Lost, Something Gained: Reflections on Life, Love, and Liberty” (out Tuesday), and covered topics including her marriage to former President Bill Clinton, her 2016 election loss to Donald Trump (and his recent conviction), and her appearance at this summer’s Democratic National Convention, where she “passed the torch to Harris” with the goal of breaking the White House glass ceiling.

Clinton and her husband publicly endorsed Harris within hours of President Biden announcing he would withdraw his candidacy and endorse the vice president. “We are honored to join the President in endorsing Vice President Harris and will do everything we can to support her,” they wrote. “America’s future depends on (her victory).”

In August took the stage at the DNCand vigorously supported Harris as a candidate.

“Together, we have made many cracks in the highest and hardest glass ceiling,” Clinton said at the convention. “And tonight, we are so close to breaking it once and for all. … And guess what? On the other side of that glass ceiling, Kamala Harris is raising her hand and taking the oath of office as our 47th President of the United States. Because, my friends, when a barrier falls for one of us, it falls, clearing the way for all of us.”

Clinton, the first female presidential candidate of a major party, told “CBS Sunday Morning” that her speech at the convention was symbolic: “It was a kind of unspoken thread that I had been there and that it was now a generational issue. This moment demanded it. And I wanted to give her the best send-off I could.”

When asked if it was personal for her, Clinton replied: “It is personal. But it is not personal because I ran for president. Of course that is part of it. It is personal because I love this country.”
