TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) — The Israeli military said Saturday it had killed Hassan Nasrallahthe leader of the militant group Hezbollah, during a strike in Beirut on Friday.

The military said it carried out a precision airstrike while Hezbollah leadership was meeting at its headquarters in Dahiyeh, south of Beirut.

Ali Karki, the commander of Hezbollah’s southern front, and other Hezbollah commanders were also killed in the attack, the Israeli military said. The Lebanese Ministry of Health said six people were killed and 91 injured in Friday’s strikes, which leveled six homes.

Nasrallah has led Hezbollah for more than three decades. There was no immediate comment from Hezbollah.

Israel continued a wave of heavy airstrikes against Hezbollah on Saturday, with Hezbollah firing dozens of rockets into Israel.

The Israeli military said it was mobilizing additional reserve soldiers Tensions with Lebanon are escalating. The military said Saturday morning that it would mobilize three battalions of reserve soldiers after sending two brigades to northern Israel earlier in the week to train for a possible ground invasion.

On Saturday morning, the Israeli military carried out several attacks in southern Beirut and eastern Lebanon in the Bekaa Valley. Hezbollah fired dozens of projectiles across northern and central Israel and the Israeli-occupied West Bank.

Smoke rose and streets were empty in Beirut’s southern suburbs after the area was hit by heavy Israeli airstrikes overnight. The shelters for displaced people set up in the city center were overcrowded. Many families slept in public places and beaches or in their cars. On the roads leading into the mountains above the capital, hundreds of people could be seen emigrating on foot, carrying small children and whatever belongings they could carry.

At least six people were killed and 91 injured in attacks against Hezbollah on Friday, the Lebanese Health Ministry said. It was the largest explosion to rock the Lebanese capital in the past year, and it seemed like it was going to happen drive the escalating conflict closer to full-scale war. At least 720 people were killed in Lebanon during the week, according to the Health Ministry.

The death toll is expected to rise significantly as teams comb through the rubble of six buildings. After the first explosion, Israel launched a series of attacks on other areas of the southern suburbs.
