Here’s the Tigers’ magic number to secure a postseason spot

LANSING, Mich. (WILX) – The Detroit Tigers are even closer to their first playoff berth in a decade. The Tigers’ magic number to secure a playoff spot is four after Tuesday’s games.

Detroit’s magic number dropped from six to four on Tuesday as the Tigers beat the Tampa Bay Rays 2-1 at Comerica Park and the Minnesota Twins lost 4-1 at home to the Miami Marlins. The magic number drops with every Tigers win or Twins loss. The Tigers are in control of their own destiny, and if the team is (5-0) or (4-1) in its final five games, it’s definitely in the postseason.

Detroit (83-74) remains tied with Kansas City for the second Wild Card spot after Kansas City beat the Nationals 1-0 in overtime on the road on Tuesday. The Tigers also won a game against the Mariners after Seattle lost to the Houston Astros. Below are the updated AL Wild Card standings.

Detroit is (28-11) since mid-August and has an 87.1% chance of making the playoffs, according to FanGraphs. On August 10, before the Tigers began their impressive late-season run, Detroit’s playoff chances were 0.2%.
