Here’s how Michigan’s schools fare on US News’ list of best colleges

(CBS-DETROIT) – US News & World Report has released its list of the best colleges and universities in the USA for 2025 and two universities from Michigan made it into the top 100.

The list evaluated nearly 1,500 U.S. institutions offering four-year bachelor’s degrees based on 17 ranking factors. Ranking criteria include factors such as graduation rates, freshman rates, standardized tests, student-to-faculty ratios, and more.

One of the main categories of the rankings is the national university category, but 13 key factors were also used to rate the schools in terms of best liberal arts colleges, best regional universities, and best regional colleges.

Princeton, MIT, Harvard, Stanford and Yale top the list, but here are the Michigan universities that rank in the top 100.

University of Michigan

The University of Michigan in Ann Arbor ranks 21st on the list of best national universities. The university was founded in 1817. Tuition for in-state students is $18,848 and for out-of-state students it is $63,081. The number of students enrolled is 33,730 and the acceptance rate is 18%.

According to the 2025 rankings, the University of Michigan also ranked third in the best public schools category and 59th in the best value schools category.

Michigan State University

Michigan State University in East Lansing ranks 63rd. Founded in 1855, the tuition for in-state students is $18,826, for out-of-state students it is $45,178, and the number of students enrolled is 40,483. The university’s acceptance rate is 84%.

It also ranked 30th in the best public schools category and 165th in the best value for money schools category.

In addition to these two universities ranking in the top 100, these Michigan schools also made the list:

  • Michigan Technological University (No. 148)
  • Wayne State University (No. 179)
  • University of Detroit Mercy (No. 189)
  • Grand Valley State University (No. 244)
  • Central Michigan University (No. 259)
  • Andrews University (No. 273)
