Here are the 14 Emmys that “Shogun” just won, beating “Game of Thrones”

The Emmys are split between the Creative Arts Emmys, which are full of smaller awards from technical to guest acting, and the main show. The Creative Arts were last night and the Primetime Emmys are next week. But we’re already seeing Shogun absolutely dominate, and it won 14(!) Creative Arts Emmys in a single night, suggesting another landslide victory is likely to follow.

Again, these are not the main awards, but Shogun is nominated in almost every major category. The Emmys it has already won are:

  • Best sound mix
  • Best sound editing
  • Best historical costumes
  • Best Production Design
  • Best Main Title Design
  • Best special effects
  • Best period/fantasy makeup
  • Best Prosthetic Makeup
  • Best Stunt Performance
  • Best Cast for a Drama
  • Best historical/fantasy hairstyle
  • Best Guest Actor in a Drama (Néstor Carbonell)
  • Best photo editing
  • Best Camera

With those 14 awards, Game of Thrones has already surpassed the old record set in 2019, when the series won 12 Creative Arts Emmys, the most in a single year for a drama. Shogun is nominated in 11 more categories, and if it wins them all, it will surpass Game of Thrones’ 22 2019 Emmys given out for the (extremely controversial) final season, which most of the time seemed more like lifetime achievement awards than things that particularly should have been won this year. Shogun, meanwhile, is only in its first season. It was only allegedly was only supposed to run for one season, but because it was such a huge success, there will now be a sequel.

If there is one category that all Shogun viewers are most interested in, it is Anna Sawai’s Best Actress award for her role as Mariko. Her competitors in this category are Imelda Staunton in The Crown, Maya Erksine in Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Reese Witherspoon in The Morning Show, Jennifer Aniston in The Morning Show, and Carrie Coon in The Gilded Age. The only name on this list that could pose a real threat is Staunton, as this is the final season of The Crown, but this is Sawai’s only season of Shogun and she won’t be returning. I have no idea how The Morning Show is still getting all these nominations considering how good the television landscape is overall and how many other outstanding performances there are from actresses. Sorry, Reese and Jen.

Next week we’ll find out if Shogun can give it his all and beat Game of Thrones. Or maybe draw. But it’s off to a good start.
