Herbert improves with 11-on-11 work

During training on Tuesday, the team switched back and forth between all offensive and defensive units.

A lot of work was needed in the running game at the beginning, with both sides having their moments.

During a 9-on-7 session, the second team’s defense was able to make an impact early on. The same was true for the first team, as Khalil Mack and Tuli Tuipulotu limited the offense to minimal yardage gains with Stick and Luis Perez at quarterback.

But the offense was able to respond on some live plays between the third teams when Jaret Patterson and Isaiah Spiller each broke free on replays without any safeties on the field.

This remained largely unchanged throughout the rest of the drills, as the defense managed to gain the upper hand over the offense in the red zone phase and prevented a touchdown in all but one repetition.

At the end of the quarter, the Bolts’ offense tried to play the ball at the 15-yard line, but was immediately stopped by linebacker Denzel Perryman, who made a tackle that caused the opponent to lose ground.

However, the offense was able to gain some momentum in the later 7-on-7 phases as Stick found Derius Davis, Jaelen Gill and Johnston for some nice gains while Perez harmonized with Jaylen Johnson and Cornelius Johnson.

Asante Samuel, Jr., Kristian Fulton (two), JT Woods and Tarheeb Still were among the players who recorded pass breakups on Tuesday.

The Bolts’ special teams were back in protective gear at practice on Tuesday, continuing to work on their performance after participating in repetitions in two preseason games.

In addition to the punt work at the beginning of practice, the unit also focused on kickoffs at the end of the session.

Kicker Cameron Dicker said the team has now gained some game experience due to the NFL’s new kickoff rule and now has a better idea of what to expect.

“It’s interesting. It’s been fun to see,” Dicker said. “They’re getting a lot more yield than normal. I’m excited to see what it’s like during the season.”

“I don’t think everyone is putting their cards on the table yet,” Dicker added.

Dicker also delivered a perfect performance on field goals on Tuesday, converting all seven attempts from a distance of about 27 to 40 meters.

He has now scored 49 of 52 field goals in team drills throughout the entire training camp.
