NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) – The 2024 Atlantic hurricane season is the busiest it has been all year. Two named storms have formed, one of which is a major hurricane and is heading toward Florida. Another investment could soon be Joyce.

Helene is the fourth hurricane to make landfall this year and the second major hurricane in the Atlantic basin. It will also be the strongest of the year, with winds approaching 130 miles per hour.

Isaac is a tropical storm that is expected to remain in the Atlantic and move eastward from the United States. It is expected to strengthen into a hurricane before dissipating within the week.

Invest 98L is a tropical wave that recently moved off the coast of Africa. It will make its way around a ridge of high pressure in the Atlantic, keeping it afloat. There are currently high development opportunities. If it reaches tropical storm status, it will be called Joyce.

Another Gulf Watch next week?

The National Hurricane Center has warned the western Caribbean of possible development into the first week of October.

A low pressure area is expected to form, providing a favorable environment for slow development as it rises north toward the Gulf. As with any storm, there is little confidence as to where something might be heading before it forms.

There are currently nine named storms in the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season. Five of them became hurricanes, two of which were severe.
