Heisman Watch 2024: Dillon Gabriel, Jaxson Dart and Cam Ward top the list

Dillon Gabriel entered the 2024 college football season as the favorite to take home the sport’s most prestigious individual award. But after Gabriel and the Oregon Ducks Despite struggling in the season-opening 24-14 win over FCS Idaho, the standout playmaker is in good company at the top of the Heisman odds list.

With several key matchups on the Week 2 schedule – including No. 3 Texas’ trip to Ann Arbor to face No. 10 Michigan in the Big House (12 p.m. ET on FOX and the FOX Sports app) – there will be plenty of opportunities for players to climb up this list with big performances.

Here’s a look at the current Heisman Trophy favorites and the chances they face in Week 2.

Jaxson DartQB, Ole Miss: +850

If you had 418 passing yards and five passing touchdowns in a 76-0 win in Week 1, chances are your name is at the top of that list. Dart also added 27 yards and a touchdown on the ground and set a new career high with six touchdowns – all before halftime. He became only the fifth quarterback in SEC history in the last 25 years to have multiple games with over 350 passing yards, four passing touchdowns and a rushing touchdown.

Dart entered the 2024 season as a Heisman candidate, but his dominant performance in Week 1 catapulted him to the top of the list. Dart has another excellent opportunity to boost his Heisman resume early in the season with a Week 2 game against Middle Tennessee.

Dillon GabrielQB, Oregon: +850

Gabriel entered the season as the favorite for the Heisman Trophy, and while his Week 1 numbers backed up the preseason hype, Oregon’s output on the field was less than inspiring. Gabriel, who is in his first season at Oregon after transferring from Oklahoma, completed 41 of 49 passes for 380 yards and two touchdowns. However, he was sacked three times as the offensive line struggled throughout the day in a disappointing 10-point win over Idaho.

Gabriel and the Ducks have a chance to make a statement against a very good Boise State team in Week 2. If Gabriel can continue to put up such strong numbers against the Broncos on Saturday and Oregon puts in a much better performance, then the former Sooners quarterback has a chance to establish himself as the clear favorite for the Heisman Trophy in Week 3.

Cam WardQB, Miami (Florida): +850

Ward shined in his debut with the Hurricanes, completing 26 of 35 passes for 385 yards and three touchdowns in an impressive 41-17 victory over home-state rival Florida. His 319 yards through the air were the highest total by a Miami quarterback in his debut in program history.

The ACC seems wide open this year, especially after Clemson and Florida State’s early struggles, so Ward and the Hurricanes have put themselves in a position to compete for a conference title, which will only increase the QB’s Heisman chances. He has a chance to put on another great performance this weekend against Florida A&M.

Carson BeckQB, Georgia: +900

Beck and Gabriel were considered favorites for the Heisman Trophy early in the season, and the Georgia quarterback did not disappoint in Week 1. Beck completed 23 of 33 passes for 278 yards and two touchdowns in the Bulldogs’ dominant 34-3 win over Clemson in Week 1.

Beck should remain among the Heisman frontrunners as all signs point to a Week 5 matchup at Alabama. If he can put up impressive numbers and lead Georgia to victory in this matchup, it would be no surprise to see Beck jump back to the top.

Jalen MilroeQB, Alabama+1000

It’s difficult to evaluate a quarterback’s performance when he attempts just nine passes in a game, and that was the case for Milroe in Alabama’s dominant 63-0 win over Western Kentucky in Week 1. The talented dual-threat QB completed seven of his nine passing attempts for 200 yards and three touchdowns, while also rushing for 79 yards and two rushing touchdowns in the win.

Milroe is a true cheat code with his ability to drive the ball down the field while also being a constant threat in the run game. It seems like he has found his WR1, as freshman phenom Ryan Williams caught an 84-yard touchdown pass from Milroe late in the first quarter on Saturday and followed it up with a 55-yard touchdown catch just before halftime.

After a Week 2 game against South Florida, Milroe and the Tide will face two consecutive major duels against Wisconsin (September 14, 12:00 p.m. ET on FOX) and Georgia (September 28, 7:30 p.m. ET).

Quinn EwersQB, Texas: +1100

Of all the players on this list, Ewers has the best chance to increase his value in Week 2 when he leads the Longhorns to Ann Arbor to face the defending national champions in the Big Noon Kickoff. All eyes will be on the Longhorns’ starter, and if he plays well, not only should his Heisman value skyrocket, but Texas’ CFP chances should get a massive boost as well.

Last weekend, Ewers looked calm, composed and collected in Texas’ 52-0 rout of Colorado State, completing 20 of 27 passes for 260 yards and three touchdowns. Ewers appears to have built a good rapport with Alabama transfer wide receiver Isaiah Bond, who had a team-best performance in the game, catching five passes for 61 yards and a touchdown.
