Heavy storm knocks down trees and power lines in Milford: “It happened so quickly”

MILFORD, Mich. (CBS DETROIT) – According to the hum of generators in the area, many people in Milford are without power and the cleanup after Tuesday’s storms has been intense.

Debris is scattered across many residents’ properties, including uprooted trees that have fallen onto roofs.

Tree removal companies, including A Maxon’s Tree Service, have been heavily overloaded since Tuesday and are struggling to keep up with work.

“Just a lot of dangerous storm work. Trees on houses, over power lines, in the streets,” said Mark Pastoric, an employee of Maxon’s Tree Service.

Some residents who did not want to go on camera said they were concerned about the downed power lines hanging in their yard, but were grateful that they only had to clean up minimal damage.

Kristi Stempien’s house and vehicles were spared after a huge tree was blown over by the strong winds.

“It happened so fast. None of our cameras, our Ring cameras, caught it, nothing. It happened so fast,” Stempien said.

Stempien is still in shock and says her family is thankful that no one was hurt. They still have power and just need to make sure the tree is removed.

“This tree has really given our house on Main Street a lot of privacy, so we need to replace it with something else,” Stempien explained.

Meanwhile, a few blocks away, Steve Cardy is grateful for his luck.

“That was a lucky miss. I guess I should play the lottery,” he laughed.

He said he had suspected for years that the huge tree in his front yard would fall in a storm, and Tuesday’s strong winds made it possible.

“I was standing in the doorway there, our front door, and she just spun around. She spun really hard and then boom. She was down,” Cardy said.

Miraculously, the tree missed its home. Now it is stuck in chaos and without electricity, but it has not lost its optimism.

“We were just so lucky, that’s all, and it could have been a lot worse,” Cardy said.

Cardy says he has already arranged for a generator to be installed so he won’t run out of power the next time the area storms.

Currently, hundreds of people in the Milford area are still sitting in the dark.

DTE Energy says it is working around the clock to restore power.
