Heavy hail and snow are expected in some parts of Colorado this week

Summer is slowly turning into autumn, but the monsoon rains are not quite over yet.

According to the National Weather Service, this could bring numerous showers and storms to Colorado on Wednesday and Thursday, with the high country and eastern plains particularly at risk. The weather forecaster warned of strong and severe storms, with large hailstones and gusty winds, as well as locally heavy rain, being the main concerns.

A report from Summit Daily also quotes National Weather Service meteorologist Chad Gimmestad as saying that snow could fall in areas above 12,000 feet Wednesday night. This report is corroborated by reports on Mountain-Forecast.com, which expects snowfalls of one to two inches in some 14,000-foot elevations in Colorado over the next few days.

Will this snow be heavy enough to impact travel? Not for most—though heavy rain could reduce visibility on the roads and cause flooding. However, the expected snow is a sign that more snow is likely to fall soon. That means outdoor recreation enthusiasts traveling to the high country should plan for that possibility and may need traction devices and warmer layers of clothing as the state says goodbye to summer conditions. Always check the weather forecast before heading out.
