Heat warning for Phoenix: High temperatures threaten

play

An extreme heat warning has been forecast for the Phoenix area, with temperatures potentially rising above 110 degrees by midweek, according to the National Weather Service.

Meteorologists said the heat warning will be in effect Wednesday through Friday and will affect central and southeastern Arizona. In some parts of the valley, highs could reach as high as 46 degrees in the second half of the week.

“Temperatures of this magnitude in early September will cause heat risks to rise into the severe to locally extreme category,” the weather service said. “The majority of the population could be at risk of heat-related illness if proper heat precautions are not taken.”

How do I stay safe during a heat warning?

Residents were advised not to go outside between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., to stay in air-conditioned rooms and not to rely solely on fans to cool down.

The weather service also warned people about:

  • Ensure adequate fluid intake
  • Wear light clothing
  • Take special precautions for people or animals sensitive to heat stress.

What’s the weather like in Phoenix this weekend?

According to the weather service, temperatures are expected to cool slightly over the weekend and next week.

However, maximum temperatures in the afternoon are likely to still be around 43 degrees.
