Harvey Weinstein is hospitalized for emergency heart surgery

Former Hollywood executive Harvey Weinstein underwent heart surgery on Monday after suffering chest pains over the weekend.

Weinstein is serving a prison sentence at New York’s Rikers Island jail after a Los Angeles jury convicted him of rape in 2022. He was admitted to Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan on Sunday and underwent surgery the following day to remove fluid from his heart and lungs, according to his publicist Juda Engelmayer and prison consultant Craig Rothfeld.

The announcement, reported by ABC News, came after the disgraced Hollywood titan was hospitalized for tests in late April.

“They examined him and sent him to Bellevue,” Weinstein’s lawyer Arthur Aidala told the Related Press“It seems like he needs a lot of help physically. He has a lot of problems. He is undergoing all kinds of tests. His health is at its limit.”

Weinstein was an influential figure in Hollywood for decades and was known for producing films such as pulp Fiction, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, And Inglourious Basterds.

In 2017, reports surfaced that Weinstein had sexually abused women for decades, including those he managed in Hollywood. The following year, he was arrested in New York and charged with rape. In 2020, Weinstein was convicted of sexually assaulting a former production assistant and raping an actress. He was sentenced to 23 years in prison for the New York verdict, but the conviction was overturned earlier this year.

New York prosecutors are currently working to re-indict Weinstein on two alleged sexual assaults in the mid-2000s and another sexual assault in 2016.

The former Hollywood producer was also convicted of rape, forced oral sex and sexual penetration with a foreign object in a separate Los Angeles trial. He continues to serve the 16-year prison sentence imposed on him by the Los Angeles Superior Court in 2022.

More than 80 women have accused Weinstein of sexually assaulting or harassing them, but he continues to deny their allegations.
