Harry Kane overtakes Wayne Rooney and is England’s most successful Champions League goalscorer

Harry Kane scored four goals, making him England’s all-time leading goalscorer in the Champions League. It was a record-breaking evening for the Bayern Munich striker.

Kane, 31, needed to score a goal in Tuesday night’s game against Dinamo Zagreb to draw level with Wayne Rooney, who has scored 30 goals in the competition.

The former Tottenham Hotspur striker scored four goals, the first three of them from penalties, to take his total to 33 as Bayern thrashed their Croatian opponents 9-2 to make a perfect start to the season.

The all-time record for most goals in this competition is held by Cristiano Ronaldo with 141.

“When you talk to Wayne Rooney, it means you’re doing something well,” Kane told host broadcaster Amazon Prime Video.

“He is one of the greatest English players and one of the best players the game has ever seen.”

Kane, who was signed from Bayern last summer for more than 100 million euros (86.4 million pounds, 110 million dollars), was also the first English player to score four goals in a Champions League match.

His hat-trick in the penalty shootout was also the first for a player of any nationality in the history of the European Cup.

“I keep all the balls after hat-tricks. The boys may be sick of signing them but I want them to keep delivering,” Kane added.

“My son Louis loves playing football at the moment. He is only three, but I’ll take it home and put it next to his bed. Then he will be happy when he wakes up in the morning.”

Kane has scored 53 goals in 50 games in all competitions since joining Bayern, including nine in his last three games for club and country after scoring twice in his 100th game for England.

Bayern return to action on Saturday against Werder Bremen, before hosting reigning Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen a week later.

The six-time European Cup winners will continue their Champions League campaign on October 2 against Aston Villa in a rematch of the 1982 final between the two clubs.
