Bayern Munich and England striker Harry Kane has received the Golden Shoe award as the top scorer in European football for the 2023–24 season.

Kane scored 36 goals in his debut season in the Bundesliga and is the first English striker to win the award since Kevin Phillips in 2000.

The 31-year-old is also the third Bayern player to win the Golden Shoe after two-time winners Gerd Müller and Robert Lewandowski.

At a ceremony in Bavaria, Kane said: “It’s a fantastic feeling. I can only thank the club and my teammates. The award is for everyone – without you I wouldn’t be standing here.”

The Golden Shoe was first awarded in the 1967/68 season and was previously the award for the best goalscorer in a European league.

However, in 1997, the rules were changed to introduce a ranking format that favored players from higher-ranking leagues.

Lionel Messi is the only player to have won the award six times, with Cristiano Ronaldo winning it four times and Erling Haaland winning the award the season before Kane.

“It’s special to be mentioned in the same breath as those names now,” Kane added.

Although the captain of the English national team scored an average of one goal every 79 minutes in the top German league last season, Bayern finished the season without winning a title for the first time since 2012.

And Kane, who has already hit his stride this season after scoring against Ulm in the DFB Cup, added: “I want to continue as I started last season, but it is important to win titles. We want to be successful as a team.”
