Harris promises to abolish taxation of tips for service sector workers

Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris told a crowd of her supporters in Las Vegas on Saturday that she supports eliminating the tax on tips for hospitality and service industry workers, an important issue for many food service workers.

Her endorsement follows a policy first introduced by her Republican rival Donald Trump. Harris made the endorsement as part of her promise to help working families should she win the presidential election in November.

“I promise everyone here that as president, we will continue to fight for working families, including raising the minimum wage and eliminating the tax on tips for service and restaurant workers,” Harris said on Saturday.

Harris’ support for repealing the tip tax comes after Trump proposed the idea at a campaign rally in Las Vegas in June.

At the time, union secretary-treasurer Ted Pappageorge responded to Trump’s proposal: “Tip earners definitely need relief, but Nevada workers are smart enough to know the difference between real solutions and wild campaign promises from a convicted felon.”

The proposal is Harris’ first notable policy position since becoming the Democratic nominee. Harris said she would release more economic policy plans in the coming week.
