Vice President Kamala Harris is under fire from critics and conservatives for “copying” former President Trump’s campaign promise not to tax service workers’ tips after the Biden-Harris administration unveiled a plan to limit tips for waiters.

“Now is a good time to remind everyone that #CopyCatKamala’s administration implemented a new enforcement program JUST LAST YEAR to collect more taxes on tips! She could stop it now… but she won’t because she’s a dishonest con artist!” Trump campaign political director James Blair wrote to X.

Blair was responding to Harris’ statement at a campaign rally in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Saturday that she supports eliminating the tax on tips for service sector workers.

“I promise everyone here that as president, we will continue to fight for the rights of working families. That includes raising the minimum wage and eliminating the tax on tips for service and hospitality workers,” Harris said at the rally.

Trump had already vowed earlier this summer that if he were re-elected to the Oval Office, he would abolish the tax on tips in the service sector and included this promise in his Republican election platform for 2024.

“This is the first time I’ve said this, and the hotel workers and the people who get tips are going to be very happy because when I get into office, we’re not going to tax tips, people who tip… This has been a point of contention for many, many years, and you provide great service, you take care of people, and I think that’s something that’s really deserved,” Trump said at a rally in Las Vegas in June.

TRUMP’S CAMPAIGN DESTROYS UNION THAT REJECTED HIS TIPS PROMISES AND BACKS HARRIS: ‘KEEP BEING PUPPETS’

Harris joins Trump’s call to eliminate the tax on tips after the Biden administration introduced a voluntary tip reporting system for industry employees last year to simplify tip tax compliance.

“The Department of the Treasury and the IRS today issued Notice 2023-13, which contains a proposed tax procedure to implement the Service Industry Tip Compliance Agreement (SITCA) program, a voluntary tip reporting program between the IRS and employers in various service industries,” the IRS said in a press release about the plan last year.

The plan was criticized by tax experts at the time as a crackdown on “waitress tips” after the IRS hired 87,000 new agents under the Biden administration, Fox News Digital reported last year.

Internet tears apart Biden’s IRS plan to target workers’ tips: “We’re finally going to take down the rich waitresses”

“Washington has a spending problem, not a revenue problem,” Republican Rep. Mike Kelly of Pennsylvania, chairman of the House Appropriations Committee’s taxation panel, told Fox News Digital at the time. “Now the IRS is going after middle-income families and working moms and dads who are just trying to make ends meet and put food on the table.”

“My colleagues and I have been warning for months that the IRS would begin targeting hard-working Americans in the Biden administration’s quest for more taxpayer money. Now we are seeing some of those concerns become reality,” he added.

When Harris announced on Saturday that she also wanted to abolish taxes on tips, Trump accused Harris of stealing the plan and called her a “copycat.”

“Kamala Harris, whose ‘honeymoon’ phase is coming to an end and who is slowly falling in the polls, simply copied my NO TAXES ON TIPS policy,” Trump wrote.

“The difference is she won’t do it, she just wants to do it for political reasons! This was TRUMP’s idea – she has no ideas, she can only steal from me,” he added.

Republicans criticize Biden’s administration over plans to restrict tips for waiters

Other critics on social media accused Harris of “copying” Trump as the vice president takes on the 45th president after President Biden dropped out of the race last month amid growing concerns about his mental health and age of 81. Critics frequently used the hashtag “#CopyCatKamala” when criticizing the vice president for “copying” Trump, causing the hashtag to trend on X over the weekend.
