Harris campaign hits back after tech-critical interview between Trump and Musk X

Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign team is targeting Donald Trump and Elon Musk after their live-streamed “X” interview, claiming the Republican candidate’s agenda is aimed at “self-centered rich guys who will betray the middle class.”

On Monday, Musk, who bought Twitter in 2022 and later renamed it X, hosted a conversation with former President Trump on the platform – an interview marred by technical difficulties and off to a rocky start after a delay of over 40 minutes – in which Trump discussed a variety of his key talking points, including immigration, censorship, trade and the assassination attempt on him.

In between a series of attacks on the Democratic presidential candidate, calling Harris “incompetent” and her campaign a “fraud,” Trump bizarrely called Harris “beautiful” on the cover of Time Magazine, comparing her to his wife, Melania. He also praised Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, saying they were “at their best.” As of this article’s publication at 6 a.m. PT on Tuesday, the post sharing the interview on Trump’s X account had more than 165 million views.

Harris’ campaign spokesman Joseph Costello fired back on behalf of the vice president after the interview, saying Trump’s extremism and his “dangerous ‘Project 2025’ agenda” were a feature, not a flaw, of his campaign, “which was clearly visible to those unfortunate enough to tune in to whatever was on X.com tonight.”

“Trump’s entire campaign is in service of people like Elon Musk and himself – self-centered rich guys who will betray the middle class and won’t even be able to host a livestream in 2024,” he added.

The Hollywood Reporter‘s latest cover story focuses on the liberal Los Angeles moguls going after Musk and Silicon Valley’s billionaire club this election. A clash has erupted over who each side wants in the White House in November, and one studio executive succinctly summed up Hollywood’s new rallying cry: “Screw those Trump-loving techies.”

Musk is supporting Trump this election. The Space-X owner had promised to donate $45 million a month to Trump’s campaign, although he later denied the pledge. Now he claims to be putting his money into his own pro-Trump action committee, AmericaPAC – and he’s not the only one pulling out the checkbook for Trump 2024.

Before the interview, Musk faced criticism from the European Union. The EU’s Internal Market Commissioner, Frenchman Thierry Breton, posted an open letter to the X founder and tech mogul on Monday, urging him to censor his interview with Trump to prevent “the spread of harmful content.” Breton said Musk, who bought the platform in 2022, was legally obligated to comply with the Digital Services Act (DSA) and combat the spread of misinformation. Linda Yaccarino, CEO of X (formerly Twitter), was copied.

“As the content in question is accessible to EU users and also disseminated in our jurisdiction, we cannot rule out potential spillover effects in the EU,” Breton continued in his letter. Any “negative effect of illegal content” could prompt the EU to take further action against X and Musk, using “our full toolbox, including adopting interim measures if justified to protect EU citizens from harm.”

Musk responded to Breton’s letter with a meme that read: “Take a huge step back and literally fuck your own face!”

Trump returned to the app after his account was suspended following the Capitol riots on Jan. 6, 2021, “due to the risk of further incitement of violence,” the company said at the time. However, when Musk took control, he restored Trump’s account.
