Half-year sales tax report shows strong economy in Rapid City

RAPID CITY, SD (KOTA) – The sales tax report presented at Wednesday’s Judiciary and Finance Committee meeting shows a strong economy in Rapid City.

Sales tax revenues for the first half of the year totaled nearly $41.2 million, up three percent from the same period last year. The report also includes June sales tax revenues of $7.96 million, just under last year’s $8 million.

The sales tax report provides breakdowns by several categories, including the municipal sales tax from the general fund and the tourism sales tax.

General Fund sales tax revenues totaled $3.68 million in June, a slight decrease from the 2023 total of $3.7 million.

Tourism sales tax totaled $604,048 in June and over $2.8 million at midyear, representing an increase of 3.81 percent from midyear 2023.

Finance director Daniel Ainslie said revenues were only slightly below budget and there was a slight decline in June.

“One month does not make a trend, but June is still an important month because it often shows what happens in July and August, which are some of our highest sales tax revenue months of the entire year,” Ainslie said.

Ainslie said these numbers are no cause for panic and hopes July and August will make up for the slight overall decline in June.
