Haddad Maia beats Wozniacki; first Brazilian in the quarterfinals of the US Open since 1968

There is still a chance that the US Open title will come to Brazil.

No. 22 seed Beatriz Haddad Maia advanced to her first US Open quarterfinal on Monday with a hard-fought 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 win over former world number one Caroline Wozniacki at Louis Armstrong Stadium.

Haddad Maia is once again setting new standards for Brazilian women’s tennis this century. She is the first Brazilian to reach the US Open women’s singles quarterfinals since Maria Bueno in 1968. (Gustavo Kuerten reached the US Open men’s singles quarterfinals in 1999 and 2001.)

In their Labor Day clash, Haddad Maia needed a grueling 2 hours and 41 minutes to overcome Wozniacki, the 2009 and 2014 US Open runner-up. Left-hander Haddad Maia has won eight of her last nine matches following her run to the final in Cleveland last week.

Haddad Maia had never made it past the second round at the US Open before this year, but the Brazilian No. 1 is making up for that this time in her fourth main draw appearance in New York.

Haddad Maia will now look to reach her second Grand Slam semifinal when she faces Karolina Muchova of the Czech Republic on Wednesday. Haddad Maia reached the semifinals at Roland Garros last year, a result that catapulted her to No. 10 in the world rankings, her highest ranking of her career to date.

Haddad Maia will have his hands full against Muchova, another former top-10 player and a semifinalist at last year’s US Open. The Brazilian has lost all three of their previous encounters, most recently a three-set win on the hard court at the WTA 1000 Cincinnati last summer.
