“Hacks” angers “The Bear,” Hollywood jokes about “childless cat lady” and other insights from the biggest TV night

The 76th Emmy Awards have concluded, and while the evening was mostly surprise-free (OK, there was one surprise), the primetime broadcast went off without a hitch with new hosts Dan and Eugene Levy at the helm. Here are the night’s key takeaways.

The father-son duo wanted the night to be “bright and shining,” and their opening monologue set that tone. Schitt’s Creek Stars who hosted the show for the first time poked fun at each other and left the star-studded audience mostly alone. In fact, her sharpest one-liner had to do with The bear.

“In the true spirit of The bear, “We’re not going to joke,” Eugene said, referring to the online debate over whether the show is really a comedy or a drama. (The FX show was nominated in the comedy category on Sunday night and dominated.)

Dan also made fun of critics who finally gave an Emmy-nominated show Reservation dogs the respect it deserves: “The Television Academy discovered a show that had been thriving creatively for years and said, ‘Hey, look what we discovered.'”

It wasn’t anything special for an awards ceremony, but some stars had something to say.

Host Candice Bergen poked fun at Republican vice presidential candidate JD Vance’s infamous “childless cat lady” statement, sarcastically commenting on “how far we’ve come” since former Vice President Dan Quayle publicly criticized her more than 30 years ago. Murphy Brown The character’s decision to have a child as a single mother.

Selena Gomez also sneaked into a cat lady line. During the presentation with her Only murders in the building She joked about her co-stars Steve Martin and Martin Short: “And let me tell you, what an honor it is to work with two guys who are so far from being childless cat ladies.”

When The western wing As the cast, including Martin Sheen, Richard Schiff, Allison Janney, Dulé Hill and Janel Moloney, reunited to present an award, Janney joked that 25 years ago, the show’s writers “actually had to use their imagination to come up with interesting storylines.”

“Unlike today, where storylines can be lifted straight from the news, storylines that writers 25 years ago would have thought were a little far-fetched, if not completely ridiculous,” Schiff added. Moloney said that while “the political landscape” has changed, the “importance of everyone getting registered and voting” has not.

The bear When actress Liza Colón-Zayas won the award for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, she urged people to “vote.”

“To all the Latinas watching me: keep believing – and go vote,” she said on stage. “Vote for your rights. Thank you.”

Alan Cumming, who accepted the award for The traitors winner of the Outstanding Reality Competition, thanked Holland and explained that where many reality formats start, “there has to be something in the water.” “Let’s find it, let’s drink it, and all of America’s problems will be solved.”

The bear won three awards for acting on Sunday night, including two consecutive Emmys for Jeremy Allen White as outstanding lead actor. The show won a fourth award for directing, but lost the award for outstanding comedy series because the Jean Smart-directed comedy Hacking took home this prize. Nevertheless, The bear set a new record for most awards won by a comedy in a single season, with 11 total, including its haul at the Creative Arts Emmys earlier this month.

Shogun won a total of 18 Emmys this year, more than any other show, including Best Drama Series. Actors Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai won Best Actor and Best Actress in a Drama Series during the primetime broadcast.
